Digestive disorders on the rise among young people, Thanh Hóa health campaign finds

Photo courtesy of the Khánh Hoà Police</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>KHÁNH HÒA — An alleged transnational fraud and human trafficking kingpin has been arrested in Khánh Hòa Province fewer than eight months after he was placed under a wanted order by a South Korean court and an Interpol Red Notice was issued for him as an especially dangerous offender.On November 21, Khánh Hòa Provincial Police apprehended Yeo Sungjin, 37, a South Korean national, while he was hiding in a luxury apartment within the Mường Thanh Viễn Triều apartment–hotel complex in Bắc Nha Trang Ward.According to Interpol Red Notice A-4658/4-2025 requested by South Korea, Yeo was one of the key executives of a large romance scam and human trafficking ring operating out of a criminal compound in Bavet, Cambodia, near the Vietnamese border.From August 2024 to February 2025, under Yeo’s direct command, a group of around 60 people used deepfake technology to create large numbers of fake social media accounts for attractive women, targeting men in multiple Asian countries.The organisation operated by building romantic trust and luring victims into transferring money via fake travel websites, promising full refunds along with free flights and hotel stays, purportedly for trips together.In that period alone, the ring allegedly defrauded victims of at least US$1million.Defrauding money was only the first step. Many victims, after being coaxed into coming to Việt Nam to meet their purported partner, were allegedly taken by Yeo or his accomplices and smuggled across the border into Cambodia.In the notorious criminal compounds in Bavet, their passports were confiscated, they were held in confinement, assaulted and forced to continue scamming others; those who resisted were brutally beaten or sold to other criminal groups.For these alleged acts, Yeo has been charged in South Korea with three particularly serious offences: fraud, participation in a structured criminal organisation, and human trafficking.After part of the ring was dismantled earlier this year, Yeo fled Cambodia, moving clandestinely through the Golden Triangle region before illegally entering Việt Nam to continue evading arrest.At the time of his arrest, Yeo’s red notice had not yet appeared in the international database of wanted criminals accessible in Việt Nam.However, through stringent monitoring of foreign nationals and heightened vigilance, the Immigration Management Division of Khánh Hòa Police detected that Yeo was residing illegally in the Mường Thanh Viễn Triều apartment.During a unit inspection, he was unable to present any identity documents and displayed numerous suspicious signs. Vietnamese Spring Fest 2025 draws thousands in Australia

At the village, the Deputy PM presented one hundred seventeen gift packages, providing essential supplies for the children.On the same day, Long held a meeting with the Gia Lai provincial Party Committee, during which Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phạm Anh Tuấn reported that within a very short period, Gia Lai suffered a “double disaster” caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi and an exceptionally heavy flood immediately afterwards, resulting in severe damage beyond the local capacity for recovery.Essential infrastructure, housing, and livelihoods of tens of thousands of households were destroyed; many sectors including education, health care, transportation, electricity, and irrigation were heavily affected. It is estimated that the disasters caused a total loss of about VND7 trillion (US$265.6 million) while leaving five dead, one missing, and ten injured.Given that local resources have been depleted, Gia Lai needs emergency assistance from the central government, Tuấn emphasised, calling for the Government to consider providing VND1 trillion to build resettlement areas for three thousand households in thirty-six high-risk locations requiring urgent relocation.The province also requested urgent aid of VND1 trillion from the central budget to rebuild Quy Nhơn and repair damaged transport infrastructure across the province.Secretary of the Gia Lai Party Committee Thái Đại Ngọc said that the entire province, from lowland to mountainous areas, has suffered serious and widespread damage. The dining hall is cramped, so meals are served in two shifts: lower-secondary students first, then the upper-secondary ones.No one complains. The school community has long adapted to the constraints of limited space and resources.Just a few years ago, this was a different place. The Chiêm Hóa Lower and Upper Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minority Students was little more than a crumbling, flood-prone campus. Teachers still recall nights when heavy rains turned dormitories into rivers, forcing both staff and students to evacuate under the pounding storm.Established in 2021 on the decayed foundation of the former Chiêm Hóa District boarding school, the new institution faced immediate hardship. The dormitory and multi-purpose hall were located in a low-lying area near a stream, and each storm threatened to wash classrooms away. Students had to walk to class along a concrete path that was repeatedly eroded by landslides each storm season.“There were years when we had to evacuate the students twice,” recalled principal Tô Thị Tấm. “Everything was soaked. Teachers stayed awake all night, moving belongings and cleaning. Life turned upside down.”The devastating floods caused by Typhoon Bualoi, which hit Việt Nam in October, left the entire dormitory and multi-purpose building underwater.Deputy Prime Minister Mai Văn Chính visited soon after, encouraging teachers and students to be resilient. That visit left a mark: the school community realised that overcoming adversity was not only a responsibility but also a source of pride for a place dedicated to lifting ethnic minority children toward brighter future.Triumphs against oddsThe challenges were severe: overcrowded classrooms, a shortage of staff, insufficient specialised rooms, and a lack of computers. Yet, in these conditions, determination thrived.Within only a few years, Chiêm Hóa Boarding School achieved what many thought impossible.In the 2024–2025 academic year, 238 out of 475 students earned ‘excellent’ rankings. The school reached a 100 per cent high school graduation rate, and many students were admitted to top universities, including the People’s Security Academy, Hà Nội University of Science and Technology, Hà Nội Medical University, and Hà Nội National University of Education. Hà Nội University of Science and Technology; and Hà Nội University of Pharmacy.However, she pointed out that there is still no unified or official platform connecting generations of Olympiad alumni.“We currently lack a dedicated information channel or forum that links former contestants, allowing them to share experiences and support one another,” she said.To address the problem, she proposed establishing a national alumni network and communication platform for Olympiad laureates, both to promote their achievements and to create opportunities for exchange and mentorship.She also recommended forming collaborative research groups involving Vietnamese and international scientists, where these young talents could take part directly in projects and gain valuable research experience.“Effectively harnessing this pool of young talent will strengthen Việt Nam’s next generation of scientists, driving long-term development in education and research amid deepening international integration,” she said.Although challenges remain, the initiatives offer practical pathways to link talent cultivation with national scientific advancement, building a strong foundation for Việt Nam’s future generations.Lê Công Lợi, Principal of the High School for Gifted Students under the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hà Nội, also called for expanding opportunities for Vietnamese students to compete in prestigious international academic Olympiads.He suggested that the MOET should work with relevant authorities to allow Vietnamese students to officially represent the country with State funding and formal recognition at competitions such as the Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad, the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad, the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad and the International Economics Olympiad.Future directionSpeaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Phạm Ngọc Thưởng congratulated and commended the achievements of Vietnamese Olympiad teams in recent years, describing them as “a source of immense pride not only for the students themselves but also for their families, teachers, schools and the nation.”He attributed the accomplishments to several key factors such as the steady improvement of Việt Nam’s education system from early years to high school, the intelligence and dedication of students and the increasing attention and investment from the Party, the State and society in education, particularly in specialised high-achieving programmes.Thưởng said as Việt Nam implements Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in education and training, the identification, training and nurturing of talented students will become even more favourable.“Gifted students are the ‘red seeds’, the foundation of the country’s future high-quality human resources,” he said.He thus called for continued innovation in identifying and nurturing young talent, training teachers, improving transparency in examinations and aligning testing standards with international benchmarks.A key priority, he added, is developing a strategic framework for discovering, nurturing and rewarding young talent through breakthrough mechanisms and policies.From 2016 to 2025, Vietnamese teams competing in regional and international Olympiads won 362 medals, including 112 gold, 140 silver, 89 bronze and 21 certificates of merit, 48 more than in the previous decade.For many consecutive years, Việt Nam has ranked among the top ten countries worldwide in subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and informatics.Several teams, notably in mathematics, chemistry, physics and informatics, have maintained consistently high performances and international standings. — VNS

These include using utensils or packaging materials that are unsafe for direct contact with food; allowing individuals with infectious diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis A or E, infectious dermatitis, pulmonary tuberculosis or acute diarrhoea to prepare food; using food additives that have been improperly re-packaged; or using water that does not meet hygiene standards for food preparation or cleaning.According to the Ministry of Health, current regulations have shown limitations in practice. Some violations are not clearly defined, making enforcement difficult, while penalties for certain offences are considered too low to deter unsafe practices.The ministry said the revisions aim to ensure consistency within the legal system and strengthen enforcement to better protect public health, particularly in the growing street food sector. — VNS

It is expected that next year, AI cameras will cover all intersections in the city,” said Đại.Not only ensuring safety and reducing traffic congestion, the AI camera system gradually raises awareness of compliance with the Road Traffic Safety Law among drivers.Nguyễn Thành Trung, 32, from Hà Đông Ward, said: “Installing AI cameras is very effective in detecting drivers’ violations. Regularly updated data on water resources enable localities to plan irrigation schedules, reduce drought and salinity risks, and improve water use efficiency. This aligns with Politburo Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, which highlights science and innovation as strategic breakthroughs for governance and development.However, he noted that many irrigation systems remain manually operated, with fragmented data not connected in real time.To address this, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment approved the development of the Vietnam Water Resources Information System (VN-WIS), a unified national data platform integrating AI, IoT, Big Data, GIS, and Digital Twin technologies. It is also developing a Digital Twin system for sustainable water management in the Mekong Delta.The Southern Campus of Thuyloi&nbsp;University presented a Data Mesh–based system that automatically collects and standardises multi-source data in real time, enabling transparent data sharing and advancing Water 4.0 management.RYNAN Technologies Vietnam JSC showcased its AIoT-based smart water management ecosystem for climate-resilient agriculture. The system monitors environmental indicators such as salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen in real time and uses machine learning to forecast anomalies and issue early warnings. This could lead to monopoly in charging infrastructure, hinder small enterprises from entering the market and reduce consumer choice.The association emphasised that EV charging infrastructure should be considered a strategic public asset linked to national energy security and the sustainable development of Việt Nam’s electric vehicle industry.A closed ecosystem might create dependence on a few large corporations and weaken local supporting industries, while an open-access system with standardised connections and transparent usage mechanisms would promote a healthy competitive market, attract private investment, spur innovation and protect consumer rights.Experiences from the EU, Japan and South Korea show that three key factors for successful EV adoption include common charging standards, open-access charging infrastructure and a transparent management framework, the association said.Accordingly, the association urged the issuance of technical standards and regulations for open-access charging systems, together with the development of a national standard for charging and connecting.The establishment of clear non-monopoly principles and transparent commercial access for all automakers is also important, the association said.
