GRDP per capita is estimated at about VNĐ85.5 million (US$3,250). The region’s rice production has shifted from one crop to three high-quality crops a year.After the merger with the former province of Tiền Giang on July 1, 2025, Đồng Tháp had a total rice cultivation area of more than 615,000ha.Most rice-growing areas have applied full mechanisation, from land preparation, sowing, tending, fertilisation and pest control to harvesting and post-harvest stages.The application of science, technology and digital transformation in the production, preservation, processing and consumption of agricultural products has recorded positive progress. This has helped create stable raw material sources and attract many large-scale processing plants using modern technology. Officers boarded the boat and found oil of unknown origin.On board were its captain, Trần Văn Tính, of Đồng Tháp Province and one crew member.Tính failed to furnish documents to prove the origin of the oil, nor did the crew have the certification required to be sailors.In the afternoon of January 16, the patrol team brought the boat ashore, and handed the case over to Squadron No. 301 under the Coast Guard Region No. 3 Command based in HCM City’s Phước Thắng Ward for further investigation.Coast Guard Intelligence Division No. 2 is tasked with monitoring the sea from the Central Highlands province of Đắk Lắk to the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta provicne of An Giang, including the Trường Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.The division is also assigned to detect and combat violations of law, such as national security crimes, smuggling, and trade fraud at sea. — VNS

VNA/VNS Photo</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>QUẢNG TRỊ - Quảng Trị Province has intensified inspections from fishing ports to fishing grounds and closely monitored fishing vessels that do not meet operational standards, as part of vigorous efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.The central province has also paid attention to collecting registration and inspection data, integrating it for management, and ensuring that non-compliant vessels are not allowed to go fishing.Lê Văn Bảo, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, has requested relevant local units to closely track the inspection deadlines of all local fishing vessels, including those registered elsewhere or at private inspection units.Through inspections, awareness campaigns, and the collection of vessel documentation from local fishermen, authorities aim to equip the provincial monitoring system with full data to manage all vessels and block non-compliant boats from fishing, he said.Bảo also urged the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment to work with local authorities to track vessels nearing the end of their technical inspection period and guide owners to complete inspections on time.Localities were tasked with accelerating the deregistration of vessels that no longer exist and swiftly ending IUU fishing activities in the province.Quảng Trị has more than 4,600 fishing vessels with a length of six metres or longer, including 158 that are unqualified for operation. Local authorities have tightened supervision by sealing non-compliant vessels, assigning staff for regular monitoring, and publicly disclosing their status to prevent IUU fishing and enable community oversight.Sen. Lt. Colonel Cao Ngọc Lâm, head of the economic security division of the provincial Department of Public Security, said the police force will intensify monitoring and strictly handle serious IUU fishing violations, especially illegal operations by local vessels in foreign waters, while coordinating sanctions to prevent unresolved cases or vessel detentions.Lê Ngọc Linh, Deputy Director of the provincial Sub-department of Fisheries and Fishery Surveillance, said enforcement against IUU fishing violations has shifted from persuasion to strict and zero-tolerance action, focusing on strong deterrence and clear accountability for vessel owners, captains and management agencies.In the coming period, authorities will focus on communication and guidance to help fishing vessel owners regularly monitor the validity and expiry of vessel documents and complete renewals or reissuance in a timely manner to avoid non-compliance, he noted. By around 2a.m. the same day, the fire had engulfed the entire cabin, forcing those on board to escape by lowering a basket boat into the sea.At 9am&nbsp;on December 17, the captain managed to contact fishing vessel No. 90779-TS from Đắk Lắk Province, which rescued all 52 fishermen and brought them safely aboard.At 7am&nbsp;on December 18, Coast Guard vessel KN364 was dispatched to transfer the fishermen to Song Tử&nbsp;Tây island. Each stage poses a high risk of exposure, not only for those directly involved but also for surrounding communities.According to health experts, rabies causes between 75 and 100 human deaths each year in Việt Nam. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, zoonotic diseases have been increasingly considered a serious threat to community health. Photo courtesy of the Khánh Hoà Police</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>KHÁNH HÒA — An alleged transnational fraud and human trafficking kingpin has been arrested in Khánh Hòa Province fewer than eight months after he was placed under a wanted order by a South Korean court and an Interpol Red Notice was issued for him as an especially dangerous offender.On November 21, Khánh Hòa Provincial Police apprehended Yeo Sungjin, 37, a South Korean national, while he was hiding in a luxury apartment within the Mường Thanh Viễn Triều apartment–hotel complex in Bắc Nha Trang Ward.According to Interpol Red Notice A-4658/4-2025 requested by South Korea, Yeo was one of the key executives of a large romance scam and human trafficking ring operating out of a criminal compound in Bavet, Cambodia, near the Vietnamese border.From August 2024 to February 2025, under Yeo’s direct command, a group of around 60 people used deepfake technology to create large numbers of fake social media accounts for attractive women, targeting men in multiple Asian countries.The organisation operated by building romantic trust and luring victims into transferring money via fake travel websites, promising full refunds along with free flights and hotel stays, purportedly for trips together.In that period alone, the ring allegedly defrauded victims of at least US$1million.Defrauding money was only the first step. Many victims, after being coaxed into coming to Việt Nam to meet their purported partner, were allegedly taken by Yeo or his accomplices and smuggled across the border into Cambodia.In the notorious criminal compounds in Bavet, their passports were confiscated, they were held in confinement, assaulted and forced to continue scamming others; those who resisted were brutally beaten or sold to other criminal groups.For these alleged acts, Yeo has been charged in South Korea with three particularly serious offences: fraud, participation in a structured criminal organisation, and human trafficking.After part of the ring was dismantled earlier this year, Yeo fled Cambodia, moving clandestinely through the Golden Triangle region before illegally entering Việt Nam to continue evading arrest.At the time of his arrest, Yeo’s red notice had not yet appeared in the international database of wanted criminals accessible in Việt Nam.However, through stringent monitoring of foreign nationals and heightened vigilance, the Immigration Management Division of Khánh Hòa Police detected that Yeo was residing illegally in the Mường Thanh Viễn Triều apartment.During a unit inspection, he was unable to present any identity documents and displayed numerous suspicious signs. At the village, the Deputy PM presented one hundred seventeen gift packages, providing essential supplies for the children.On the same day, Long held a meeting with the Gia Lai provincial Party Committee, during which Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phạm Anh Tuấn reported that within a very short period, Gia Lai suffered a “double disaster” caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi and an exceptionally heavy flood immediately afterwards, resulting in severe damage beyond the local capacity for recovery.Essential infrastructure, housing, and livelihoods of tens of thousands of households were destroyed; many sectors including education, health care, transportation, electricity, and irrigation were heavily affected. It is estimated that the disasters caused a total loss of about VND7 trillion (US$265.6 million) while leaving five dead, one missing, and ten injured.Given that local resources have been depleted, Gia Lai needs emergency assistance from the central government, Tuấn emphasised, calling for the Government to consider providing VND1 trillion to build resettlement areas for three thousand households in thirty-six high-risk locations requiring urgent relocation.The province also requested urgent aid of VND1 trillion from the central budget to rebuild Quy Nhơn and repair damaged transport infrastructure across the province.Secretary of the Gia Lai Party Committee Thái Đại Ngọc said that the entire province, from lowland to mountainous areas, has suffered serious and widespread damage. He requested that police and military forces continue to stay and assist the local authorities and residents in overcoming storm and flood aftermath, especially as hundreds of schools, medical stations, and thousands of homes remain in disarray.Speaking at the meeting, Deputy PM Long expressed sympathy for the province and bereaved families on the difficulties facing them. He acknowledged the proactive and coordinated response by the local authorities and armed forces in the face of disasters, affirming that the timely evacuation of residents and assistance provided by the police and military are a bright spot in the province’s disaster prevention and response efforts.In the immediate term, the province needs to focus on delivering food, essential supplies, and medicine to residents, while repairing and cleaning medical stations and schools to ensure that students can return to classes as soon as possible.In addition, Gia Lai must closely monitor the weather, remain vigilant, and avoid complacency. The armed forces should keep supporting residents and local authorities in overcoming flood consequences.
