This figure is significantly higher among younger women, with Gen Z (71 per cent) and millennial (65 per cent) women far more likely to say this than Gen X (49 per cent) or Baby Boomers (34 per cent).The data alludes to a generational shift, with younger people embracing entrepreneurship. Nearly half (48 per cent) of Gen Z women believe their generation is more entrepreneurial than the generation before.As well as formal business ventures, 42 per cent of women globally want to start a side hustle to make money outside of their main job, a number that is once again higher for Gen Z women (61 per cent).For many women, the entrepreneurial spirit is inspired by an appetite to earn more money (59 per cent), gain financial independence (54 per cent) and improve work-life flexibility (37 per cent), but motivations differ among generations.The survey found that education and childcare are among the top sectors that Gen Z women would like to start a business in. The most popular industry is cosmetics and beauty, potentially driven by rise in beauty influencers on social media, with a 22 per cent rise in beauty content on TikTok year-over-year.Despite an evident appetite for entrepreneurship, the research shows that for many women, including those who have already started a business, there are still barriers in place.Women are less likely to say they feel confident in general business-related skills – particularly financial decision making (30 per cent vs. 41 per cent for men), public speaking (26 per cent for women vs. 34 per cent for men), networking (23 per cent vs. 34 per cent) and identifying new business opportunities (13 per cent vs. 24 per cent).Women who have already founded a business also say they struggle disproportionately with responsibilities and work-life balance, with women founders twice as likely as men to say childcare arrangements were a challenge when starting their business (12 per cent vs. six per cent).According to the survey results, women said that training on how to develop a business plan (28 per cent) and more widely available and accessible grants (24 per cent) would make them feel more confident in starting their own business.Younger women are also more likely than older generations to feel they’d benefit from a support network, with 31 per cent of Gen Z women saying having a business partner would make them more confident, and a similar proportion (29 per cent) saying access to a mentor would help. Interestingly, these factors score even higher than access to grants (25 per cent) for this generation.Winnie Wong, Mastercard's country manager for Việt Nam, Cambodia and Laos, said: “This research highlights the remarkable entrepreneurial spirit among women worldwide, particularly within younger generations. These elements significantly contribute to Việt Nam’s retail and commercial leasing sectors.“Compared to Thailand, Indonesia, or Singapore, Việt Nam’s retail market is still developing. However, it has made significant strides post-COVID-19," said Matthew Powell, Director of Savills Hà Nội."Previously, many Vietnamese consumers preferred shopping abroad, especially in Bangkok, due to the strong presence of international brands.As domestic demand rises, more global brands recognise the potential for expansion in Việt Nam. Only a few banks offer such loans at the moment, but their scale is very small,” he added.According to Thân, the 20 per cent corporate income tax rate has been in place since 2016. It is the same as the rate in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, lower than in the Philippines (30 per cent), Malaysia (24 per cent), Indonesia (22 per cent), but higher than in Singapore (17 per cent) and Brunei (18.5 per cent).“A tax reduction along with additional support for small and medium-sized enterprises is essential,” he said.The association also proposed that the Government impose administrative sanctions on entrepreneurs and businesses that have not fully fulfilled their obligations to the State. The aim is to uphold the rule of law while alleviating concerns for other entrepreneurs and businesses.The private sector plays an important role in the economy, as it contributes about 50 per cent of GDP and 56 per cent of total social investment capital, while creating more than 82 per cent of jobs, Thân said.Of this, the domestic private sector accounts for 28 per cent of GDP, higher than other economic sectors, he added."If this sector can grow sustainably at a double-digit rate, the GDP target of over 8 per cent this year and at least 10 per cent for the 2026-2030 period might be achievable," he said. — VNS

Trading value on HoSE slightly decreased to VNĐ18.6 trillion (US$727.7 million), marking a 0.5 per cent drop from the previous session.Meanwhile, the VN30-Index, which tracks the 30 largest-cap stocks on HoSE, also declined by 7.19 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 1,356.43 points. Within the VN30 basket, 18 stocks fell, seven advanced and five remained unchanged.The market’s decline was primarily driven by weakness in blue-chip banking stocks. The Bank for Foreign Trade of Việt Nam (VCB) recorded the sharpest drop, slipping 0.74 per cent, erasing more than 0.9 points from the VN-Index. Liquidity declined slightly from the previous session but remained at a relatively high level, suggesting that buying pressure is temporarily cooling while profit-taking continues to weigh on the market."This could exert short-term pressure on the market in the next session. However, this movement may only be a minor correction to attract additional capital inflows. The support zone around 1,295 - 1,300 points is expected to stabilise and provide a cushion for the market. If buying support remains strong, the market still has a chance to resume its uptrend.""Investors should closely monitor supply and demand dynamics to assess the strength of capital inflows. Short-term buying opportunities may still be present, particularly in stocks that are showing positive technical signals from strong support zones or are currently retreating to key support levels. However, investors should consider locking in profits on stocks that have risen sharply to resistance levels to secure gains."On the Hà Nội Stock Exchange (HNX), the HNX-Index edged down 0.08 per cent, closing at 239.19 points. Liquidity slightly declined, while foreign investors extended their net-selling streak, though with a significantly lower volume.On the Hồ Chí Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE), the VN-Index rose 3.77 points, or 0.29 per cent, to close at 1,296.75 points. However, market breadth was negative, with 175 decliners outnumbering 136 gainers. Trading liquidity declined slightly to approximately VNĐ15.9 trillion (US$622 million), with nearly 741 million shares exchanged.Meanwhile, the VN30-Index, which tracks the 30 largest stocks by market capitalisation on HoSE, gained 4.28 points, or 0.32 per cent, to 1,353.73 points. Within the VN30 basket, 18 stocks advanced, while 11 declined and one remained unchanged.Large-cap stocks continued to drive the market's recovery. However, inflows are expected to provide support when the market retraces, with the nearest support level at 1,285 points. Meanwhile, the market still has room for further recovery, aiming to test the 1,300 – 1,310-point resistance zone in the near future."Investors can still expect continued market support. Short-term opportunities remain available in stocks with strong upward momentum from key support zones. Transactions using cryptocurrency and digital assets in the financial centres are expected to begin on July 1, 2026.Commenting on the proposal, the MoF said that Việt Nam currently does not have regulations on digital assets or digital currencies, while managing these assets requires a long process of issuance, ownership, transaction, service licensing and information security to ensure national financial safety.It noted: "Since the implementation of policies regarding cryptocurrency and digital currency in the financial centres involves many issues that need further research that involves multiple ministries and agencies and affects financial security, to ensure feasibility, the Ministry of Finance suggests removing the regulation on the start date for transactions involving cryptocurrency and digital currency from July 1, 2026."The MoF also recommended the MPI to gather feedback from the State Bank of Việt Nam, as according to the proposal, cryptocurrency and digital currency would be used as a means of payment in financial transactions. — VNS &nbsp;

Specifically, the export price for 5 per cent broken rice has decreased by $303 per tonne, a decrease of over 43 per cent.Once a strong competitor for Thai rice and at times the world's highest-priced rice, Vietnamese rice has now fallen behind, ranking as the lowest among major rice exporting nations.Phan Mai Hương, a rice market analyst, explained that in fact, Việt Nam’s rice prices surged in 2023 and early 2024 primarily thanks to India’s export ban. However, historically, Việt Nam’s white rice was priced at around $400 per tonne, while fragrant rice has ranged from $500 to $600 per tonne.Only a few speciality brands were exported at higher prices. Thus, although the current prices have decreased sharply compared to 2023 and 2024, they are not exceptionally low given that India has resumed exports.Hương emphasised that based on the market, the global price drop was expected from late 2024 as supply levels rebounded.Phan Văn Có, Marketing Director at Vrice Co Ltd agreed that rice export prices are affected by abundant production from supplying countries, particularly India. This has intensified competition among rice exporting countries, including Việt Nam.The continuous price drop has created challenges for some exporters, particularly those who signed early sales contracts in late 2024. Some customers are now renegotiating for lower prices or postponing shipments to pressure suppliers.However, businesses had already agreed on purchasing prices with farmers. Lowering selling prices now would mean buying at a loss, leading to sluggish trade in the Mekong Delta region.Adding to the pressure, the upcoming winter-spring rice crop is about to be harvested, which is the highest output of the year.Many local farmers traditionally sell freshly harvested rice immediately, as they lack drying and storage facilities. Hương emphasised that low trading activity doesn’t equate to reduced demand.The Philippines and Malaysia still have a strong demand for reasonably priced rice in the mid-range quality segment, while the Middle East and Africa have increasingly favoured Vietnamese rice.By March and April, when the winter-spring harvest nears completion, importers must make purchasing decisions and prices are expected to rise gradually.Currently, rice prices are low and export orders are few, while harvest volumes are increasing and farmers want to sell immediately.To ease this strain, businesses hope banks will provide working capital support for rice procurement and temporary storage. This would prevent supply bottlenecks for farmers and help companies stockpile rice for future exports at better prices.In the long term, experts recommend that Vietnamese exporters proactively expand their market base and diversify their customer portfolios to avoid over reliance on a few major buyers.In addition, they should tap into distribution channels and niche markets with demand for premium rice segments, which, though smaller in volume, offer higher economic returns and would help strengthen the Vietnamese rice brand globally. — VNS

Overall, the banking system’s CASA ratio reached 20.3 per cent, recovering from the bottom of 17.6 per cent recorded in the first quarter of 2023.The competition among banks to attract stable CASA sources, particularly from individual customers, has intensified. Many new products and initiatives, including the auto-earning feature, which allows accounts to automatically generate daily profits from idle money, are being introduced to entice customers.The banks are also pushing out promotions to attract new customers. Recently, Techcombank sponsored the vibrant Anh Trai Vượt Ngàn Chông Gai 2024 (Call Me By Fire) programme to boost deposits and attract younger customers.MB bank maintained a CASA ratio of 36.7 per cent, with a balanced contribution from individual and corporate clients. With a large customer base and transactions via digital channels, MB can save on input capital costs and significantly enhance business efficiency.With a large number of regular individual customers, Vietcombank, MB, Techcombank, MSB and Vietinbank will continue to leverage extensive networks, digitalisation efforts and ecosystem advantages to maintain abundant funding sources and competitive capital costs.Meanwhile, retail-focused banks like VPBank and VIB maintain CASA levels between 15 to 17 per cent.VPBankS emphasised the growing importance of CASA for the Cost of Funds (COF) in the coming years. As a result, banks are expected to invest more heavily in technology to better serve retail customers and ensure customer loyalty in using their accounts for primary transactions.Looking ahead to 2025, CASA growth is expected to depend on factors including low interest rates, an improving economy and strengthened financial health of businesses and individuals. These successes would lay a solid foundation for the sector's breakthrough in 2025. However, the industry faces challenges, including trade barriers such as anti-subsidy investigations by the US Department of Commerce (DOC).Nam emphasised that global competition necessitates improved corporate governance and strict adherence to international market regulations. With proactive efforts from enterprises and support from local authorities and regulatory agencies, trade obstacles can gradually be overcome. This approach promises to maintain a stable supply chain, enhance product quality, and drive export growth.Yet, challenges remain. In marine capture fisheries, meeting requirements to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing requires greater transparency, but businesses face difficulties accessing vessel data.For tuna, regulations mandating a minimum catch size of 0.5 metres create difficulties for fishermen and fishing companies, necessitating revisions to sustain raw material supplies. Meanwhile, the shrimp and pangasius industries face stiff competition from Ecuador, India and Indonesia, requiring improvements in breeding and cost reductions to maintain market positions.The achievement of the $10 billion export milestone in 2024, can be attributed in part to efforts to open and strengthen connections with key markets such as the US and the EU. Shrimp remains the flagship product, projected to account for $4 billion in exports. Pangasius and tuna also reported growth, with pangasius estimated at $2 billion and tuna approaching $1 billion.Mainland China is the leading importer of Vietnamese seafood, accounting for $1.7 billion, up 19 per cent. In 2024, the sector's total export turnover is projected to reach approximately US$10.2 billion, including $3.1 billion from natural rubber, $4.6 billion from processed rubber products, and $2.5 billion from rubberwood. These figures highlight the industry's continued prominence in the global supply chain.”He as well as other speakers at the conference mentioned the EUDR as a significant challenge faced by the sector.The EUDR mandates that rubber imported into the EU must be sourced from deforestation-free areas, with full traceability and documentation to prove compliance. Producers must also conduct due diligence to ensure that their supply chains meet these standards.Enterprises therefore must invest in production processes and improve traceability to meet these international market requirements, especially those of the EU, Hưng said.Prof. Joseph Adelegan, secretary general of the International Rubber Study Group, emphasised the importance of traceability and sustainable production, saying that Southeast Asian countries, especially Việt Nam, need to focus on improving quality and traceability to comply with the stringent requirements of the EU. Meeting these standards will help the country’s rubber industry achieve sustainable development.He highlighted that Thailand, the world's largest producer of natural rubber, has long prepared for EUDR compliance, allowing it to export high-value products to major EU markets. Việt Nam has favourable conditions comparable to Thailand and has seen promising developments.Compliance with EUDR regulations imposes challenges such as high production costs, and limited technical capacity in developing regions, but compliant producers will have opportunities to “gain market access to the EU for deforestation-free products, premium pricing for sustainably sourced rubber, and long-term competitiveness through enhanced supply chain transparency,” he pointed out.Võ Hoàng An, the association’s general secretary, said rubber exports to the EU were worth $587.6 million in the first ten months of the year, accounting for 6 per cent of the sector’s total export revenue.While not Việt Nam’s leading export market, the EU is an attractive market for Vietnamese enterprises given the market’s high purchasing power and advantages brought from the EU-Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement, he said.“Therefore, evaluating opportunities and challenges related to EUDR is vital for building effective adaptation strategies,” he said.He highlighted that the regulation has raised substantial concerns within Việt Nam’s rubber industry.
